The name's Aleks. I'm just your average flamboyantly queer homoromantic pansexual FtM transdude. And proud of it. ...Okay, so maybe there's nothing average about that.
Also, Khaos Komix by Tab Kimpton is the best thing ever and you should read it if you haven't already.
Also also, Highly Experimental by Cammiluna is very incredibly awesome too!
So guys has anyone stopped to think about the fact that a large part of the Tumblr community is all about sex-positivity and body-positivity and by making it so that sexual images cannot be seen even in a search tag they have silenced, shamed, and isolated all of those users? Seriously who is going to search “penis” and not be expecting to see penises? That’s just nuts. Hmm nuts would be more iffy but seriously! Why not just create a “safe search” for tags? You know, turn off safe search in order to see NSFW/”Adult” (uh does NSFW not already imply Adult?) blogs.
Furthermore, there is a large LGBT community on Tumblr. And, within that, a large trans* and gender variant community. There is definite overlap between the body positive and trans* communities. Where else can you find trans*-centric nude images, both sexual and not, that are not completely fetishized but rather accept the person for what they are and their capability to choose to be a sexual being? And couldn’t silencing this fairly vast resource of lgbt-inclusive body positivity from trans* and gender variant individuals’ views be considered discrimination? Because you are taking a marginalized group who is prone to being victims of discrimination, fetishization, and hatred and removing a very valuable resource for their mental health.
And just for the body- and sex- positive communities on Tumblr in general, is this not a great injustice? These communities are a great support network for a great many people. There are resources that urge those struggling with eating disorders to be strong and healthy. There are resources that show those who have been victims of slut-shaming that there is nothing wrong with them in a society that says otherwise. There are resources that help victims of sexual assault and abuse to heal and believe in themselves in a society that shames and blames them. And, possibly most importantly, there are resources that help trans* people to feel included and normal in a world that either marginalizes, illegitimatizes, fetishizes, belittles, or threatens their very existence.
There is NO legitimate reason why Tumblr could not simply incorporate a “safe search” feature into their tag search that lets YOU CHOOSE if you want to see images from blogs flagged as NSFW or this new “Adult” in your tag searches. It would take like literally ten minutes for any web programmer worth their paycheck. You know, like almost every other search engine on every other website on the planet.
So, I will close with this: Tumblr, you have established yourself as a resource for a great many people. Do not allow yourself to suddenly become part of the problem. It is an injustice to ALL of your users, both those who are affected and those who are not. You’re better than that. And such an action can and will seriously jeopardize your continued existence as a company.
Also I can’t help but wonder if using “body” and “sex” so much in the tags on this post will get me flagged…. #tumblr #tumblr staff #WTF #seriously #jerks #sex positivity #body image #body positivity #lgbtq equality #marginalization #trans positive #sex positive #body positive #tumblr update #trans representation
For father’s day, my grandfather got one of those really loud Baby Ben alarm clocks from
me and my mother. And whenever he gets an alarm clock he has to “test it” in order to “make sure it will wake [him] up”. He just started complaining because “I just woke up and this stupid thing didn’t wake me up”. So I asked him what time he set it for. “3am.” …..It was 2:56am. And then when I tried to point out this fact, he could not seem to grasp the concept that–at 2:56am–3am had not happened yet.
I don’t even….
